BULLET Bar, Pub or Club Staff
BULLET Off-Licence
BULLET Staff Waiters and Waitresses in restaurants
BULLET Cashiers in Shops or Supermarkets that sell alcohol
BULLET Anyone who sells or serves alcohol in licensed premises

 

Why should I take this course?

 
This course was developed by the BIIAB to meet the industries requirement for
a course to demonstrate employer’s commitment to responsible alcohol retailing.
This qualification gives the candidates essential understanding of the responsibilities
that a retailer of alcohol has. It also equips those who gain the qualification with
the skills and knowledge to sell alcohol in a responsible manner, and to act within
the licensing law. The benefits of this qualification are that it provides additional
protection to licensed premises operators and candidates alike. This is achieved
through the compulsory section of the training and examination, which ensures that
the candidates fully understand the licensing legislation with regards to:
BULLET Underage sales
BULLET Serving persons who are drunk
BULLET The four Licensing objectives

 

How long is the course?

 
The course is designed to be undertaken by candidates in a day, this includes the
final examination.

 

What does the course cover?

 
BULLET The nature of alcohol and the effect that it has on the human body
BULLET The main issues in the 2003 Licensing Act as they relate to alcohol retailers
and servers
BULLET Licensing law in relation to the protection of children from harm
BULLET The social responsibilities relating to the retail sale of alcohol
BULLET How to recognise drunkenness, and your duty not to serve drunk customers
BULLET Appropriate strategies that can be adopted to prevent or eliminate
alcohol-related crime and conflict and the importance of personal safety

 

Do I have to take an exam to pass the course?

 
Yes, the examination is undertaken in the afternoon of the training course and
consists of 25 multiple choice questions. The examination is split into two sections:
BULLET Part 1 – Three compulsory questions, which must all be answered correctly
BULLET Part 2 – 22 questions, of which 14 must be answered correctly to pass
the examination

 

Will I get a certificate if I pass?

 
Yes. Once the exams are independently marked, which takes about a week, you will
receive a nationally recognised certificate accredited by the BIIAB.
