BIIAB Scottish Licensee’s Certificate (SLC) On-Sales
Who is this course for?
The Scottish Licensee’s Certificate (SLC) On-Sales has been designed for anyone
who wishes to enter the on-licensed retail sector in Scotland, such as:
Pub or Bar Licensee’s and managers
Restaurant owners and operators
Night Club managers
Why should I take this course?
The SLC On-Sales is a nationally recognised licensing qualification that is designed to
meet the training needs for anyone who has to authorise the retail sale of alcohol
in on-licensed premises. The course is also recognised by Scottish licensing benches
as evidence of the applicant’s knowledge and understanding of licensing law, as
well as the social responsibilities associated with running licensed premises in
Scotland. Furthermore this qualification is supported by many pub owners and
operators, retail companies as well as several major Scottish brewers.
How long is the course?
The course has been designed to be undertaken by candidates in a day, including the
final examination.
What does the course cover?
The course has been designed to cover all the major areas of the Licensing (Scotland)
Act 1976 including areas such as:
Types of licences
New licences, renewals and transfers
Permitted hours
Young persons and proof of age
Rights and duties
Gaming, betting and lotteries
Alcohol
The prevention of and dealing with violence
Drugs
Weights and Measures Act (Intoxicating Liquor) Order 1988
Price marking (Food and Drink on Premises) Order 1979
Trade Descriptions Act and Consumer Protection Act
Do I have to take an exam to pass the course?
Yes, the examination is undertaken in the afternoon of the training course and is
a multiple choice style exam.
Will I get a certificate if I pass?
Yes. Once the exams are independently marked, which takes about a week, you will
receive a nationally recognised certificate issued by the BIIAB.
