NVQs are work-related, competence-based qualifications that reflect the skills and
knowledge needed to do a job effectively, and show that a candidate is competent in the
area of work the NVQ represents. They cover all the main aspects of an occupation,
including current best practice, the ability to adapt to future requirements and the
knowledge and understanding that underpin competent performance.
Who are these courses for?
This range of National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs) has been created for people who
are employed, or volunteer, as event stewards or safety marshals at stadiums and
arenas throughout the country. These qualifications will assist these people within their
current roles and enable them to better prepare for future events. These programmes
are of particular value to people working within areas such as:
Sports grounds and stadiums
Arenas
Festivals
Public events, such as carnivals or fete’s
Race tracks
Exhibition centres
Motor racing circuits

Level 3 in NVQ in Spectator Safety
This qualification is aimed at team leaders, senior stewards and head marshals and is
designed to assess their skills and competence at spectator events in a more in depth
and stringent manner. The programme has been created to build upon their prior
knowledge and qualifications.
Candidates will be expected to demonstrate a high level of proficiency in preparing both
stewards and their venue for spectator events. The programme also examines their
ability to develop working relationships with colleagues and concerned parties, as well
as how to respond and deal with spectator problems and emergencies.
Level 4 NVQ in Spectator Safety Management
The Level 4 NVQ has been created to assess the competence of stadium and arena
managers and safety officers. Candidates are expected to demonstrate ability, planning
for and ensuring the safety of people at an event, managing resources and developing
implementing policies. This course is specifically aimed at stadium safety managers and
those responsible for managing and organising the safety of spectator events.
